Botulinum toxin injection is efficient, tolerant and safe for removal of unpleasant mimic wrinkles. It changes the appearance in its natural parameters which is exactly the thing patients want, and which has been proved in the years of use. Botulinum toxin is produced by the specific bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In nature there are several toxin types, but only type A, and rarely type B, is used in medicine. Botulinum toxin is neurotoxic. It blocks muscular nerve signals. So, the muscle injected with the toxin does not contract, and remains relaxed. This is successfully used to treat mimic wrinkles. Mimic wrinkles are the wrinkles that appear on your face when expressing emotions.
It is thought that the most suitable age for its use is the age over 30. If we have to determine some age limit, it will be over the age of 55. The conceptions, of course, have undergone changes, and when combined with other procedures the botulinum toxin could also be applied well on in years, and in younger patients it could be used as a preventive measure against the formation of new lines and wrinkles.
The procedure is administered by a certified specialist, and it takes about 15 minutes. So it could be reasonably called a „lunchtime procedure”, made during the lunchtime office break, but no matter how much time it takes, it is extremely serious. No special preparations are needed as it is adapted individually, and has a reverse effect.
Botulinum toxin injection is the most successful nonsurgical method for treatment of mimic wrinkles on the forehead, the lines between the eyebrows and at the corners of the eyes. The first results are visible between 48-72 hour, and remains for 4 to 6 months. If a slight correction is needed, this is made after the second week.
The shortest period between two therapies is three months, but optimally they are 6, and each subsequent injection extends the period of efficiency.
In the course of time the toxin loses its effect, and the condition of wrinkles becomes what it was before the injection. The reason is that its effect has soothed the mimic muscles, i.e. the existing wrinkles and lines have not aggravated, and no new lines and wrinkles were formed. It is thought that after 5 to 8 applications in one and the same area of skin, the skin remains healthy, and it could take a prolonged period before a new procedure is made.
Botulinum toxin Type A has been approved for treating excessive sweating in the armpit in many countries since 2002, and in the USA since 2004. Yet, specialists still debate on its use for treating excessive perspiration on feet, but most probably the approval is in the way. It could also be applied to other areas of excessive perspiration.
